Preventive Medicine at Ural State Medical University
The Sanitary and Hygienic Faculty of the Sverdlovsk Medical Institute was organized in 1943 – at the very height of the war, in the year of the Battle of Stalingrad. In 1943 The People’s Commissariat of Health of the USSR decided: “To allocate from the medical faculty by September 1 to the newly organized sanitary and hygienic faculty students of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th courses (50 people from each course) and ensure admission to the 1st course with a number 75 students.
The faculty trains students on the main educational program of higher education in the specialty 32.05.01. – Medical and preventive work. The Federal State Educational Standard of Higher Education was approved by the order of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation of January 16, 2017 No. 21.
The practical orientation of educational programs is clearly seen in all periods of educational activity at the sanitary and hygienic (medical and preventive) faculty. Involving students in scientific research conducted by university scientists on military medical topics, epidemiology, and hygiene of working conditions at defense enterprises was a direct continuation of the educational process and, at the same time, the education of scientific and pedagogical personnel for the medical institute.
Today, the educational process uses the forms of training of the future hygienist, epidemiologist, laid down by the founders of the methodological school of the specialty (training directly at the workplace, in the epidemiological focus, hospital, children’s institution), and modern innovative educational technologies, incl. virtual laboratory work, computer simulation, distance learning. The departments that train doctors in the specialty “Medical and preventive care” actively respond to reforms in the system of higher and postgraduate education, introducing a quality management system, a method for scoring student achievements, and a competency-based approach to teaching.

During the period of study at USMU, students of the Faculty of Preventive Medicine master more than 60 disciplines of the Curriculum, undergo educational and industrial practice on the basis of bodies and institutions of Rospotrebnadzor and organizations providing medical services to the population. The target form of student training for bodies and institutions of Rospotrebnadzor is successfully practiced.
The departments of the Faculty of Preventive Medicine also participate in the implementation of residency, postgraduate, master’s, additional professional education and training of highly qualified personnel. As part of the implementation of additional professional education programs, the teaching staff of departments and institutions of practical healthcare trains doctors and specialists in hygienic specialties, epidemiology, and healthcare organization.
